  • Overview

    This position is responsible for the development and installation of automated manufacturing equipment and control systems for new model programs. Primary duties include obtaining cost and timing for customer RFQs, project tracking, control system design and programming, and equipment testing and installation.  Secondary duties include equipment support for production and working on cross-functional teams for continuous improvements.

    Responsibilities

    • Maintain a clean and safe work area and report any unsafe working conditions
    • Lead the development of technical specifications for future automation projects and processes
    • Research and adapt innovative technologies to improve current process capabilities
    • Support production as issues arise with new model systems to ensure equipment downtime is minimized
    • Provide technical assistance during new model launch to help resolve quality concerns, increase productivity, and improve safety
    • Develop operation instructions and provide all documentation and software for automation equipment
    • Ensure all automated systems meet all safety requirements allowing for safe operation in production
    • Provide training to manufacturing and maintenance on proper operation of newly installed equipment
    • Create new automated work cells including robotics, material handling systems and packaging equipment
    • Direct the development, design, testing, and installation of automated manufacturing systems and processes
    • Perform cost benefit analysis on various control systems and make recommendations for capital investments
    • Prepare control system design documents including schematics, I/O lists, panel designs, and control narratives
    • Participate in meetings as requested to verify scope and status of automation projects
    • Provide support or source new PLC, HMI, and robotic programming and modify existing programs as needed
    • Reuse inactive assembly equipment and components to reduce cost of new model quotes and launches
    • Work closely with suppliers to keep projects on track and ensure equipment functionality through run-offs
    • Participate on cross functional Kaizen teams and continuous improvement initiatives
    • Track ongoing equipment build status and communicate as needed
    • Maintain list of lessons learned and apply to new model equipment builds
    • Comply with all company policies
    • Other duties as assigned under the direction of the Engineering Manager

    Decision Making Authority:

    • Authorized to lock-out equipment that is considered unsafe for operation, must notify production supervision
    • Determines list of qualified automation suppliers and decides when and where to outsource projects

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering; preferably in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
    • 5-7 years industrial automation experience in an automotive manufacturer
    • In depth experience drawing with CAD software
    • Strong computer skills including proficiency with MS Office Word, PPT, Excel, Outlook, and Project
    • Proven track record of hands-on support on production and maintenance automation equipment
    • Demonstrated experience with PLC, HMI, and robotic programming
    • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
    • Detail oriented with great organizational and time management skills

     

    Required Education/Qualifications for Hire or Promotion:

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience
    • 2-5 years engineering experience in an automotive manufacturer
    • Working knowledge of CAD software
    • Good computer skills including MS Office products
    • Must have good mechanical skills and technical knowledge of automation equipment
    • Problem solving knowledge and experience
    • Ability to learn PLC, HMI, and robotic programming
    • Good communication skills both written and verbal
    • High degree of self-motivation, commitment, and integrity, team player

     

    Work Environment and Physical Demands

    • Employee must adhere to company safety policies, includes wearing required PPE
    • Occasional exposure to difficult working conditions (heat, dirt, fumes, lubricants, etc)
    • Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 40 pounds overhead
    • Ability to stand for long periods on concrete floor
    • Attend scheduled work hours on a regular and timely basis. Maintain good attendance
